Q.1. A long, straight wire carries a 15A current along the +y axis. What is the

       force on an electron located instantaneously at x = 6cm and moving with

       a speed of 106 m/s in the following directions:

(a) away from the wire along the +x axis

(b) parallel to the +y axis;

© parallel to the +z axis?


Q.2. In a certain experiment protons (mp, qp) and α particles (mα = 4mp ;

       qα = 2qp) must move with the same radius perpendicular to a magnetic

       field whose strength can be changed. Find the ratio of the field

       strengths needed if they have the same value for the following:

(a) speed

(b) linear momentum

© kinetic energy


Q.3. An ac source of emf with frequency 50 Hz and a peak(maximum)

       potential difference of 100V is in an RLC series circuit with R = 9Ω,

       L = 0.04 H and C = 100µF. Find:

(a) the impedance

(b) the phase angle

© the peak (max.) potential difference across each element.


Q.4. In an RLC series circuit R = 50 Ω, C = 80 µF and L = 30mH. The 60 Hz

       source has an rms potential difference of 120V. Find:

(a) the rms current and potential difference for each element

(b) the power factor

© the rms power delivered by the source

(d) the resonance frequency

(e) the peak values of potential difference for each element at the

     resonance frequency.


Q.5. A 6 µF capacitor has a reactance of 11 Ω.

(a) What would be the reactance of a 0.2 mH inductor at the same

     frequency?

(b) At what frequency would the reactance be equal?


Q.6. A circuit consists of a capacitor of 2 µF and a resistor of 1000 Ω. An

       alternating e.m.f. of 12V (r.m.s.) and frequency 50Hz is applied. Find

(a) the current flowing

(b)the voltage across the capacitor

© the phase angle between the applied e.m.f. and current
