Yemen: Volcano eruption kills at least 8, report


Sanaa, 1 Oct. (AKI) - At least eight Yemeni soldiers have been killed in a volcanic eruption on an island off Yemen's Red Sea coast, according to a report on the Dubai-based satellite TV channel Al Arabiya.

The eruption on Jabal al-Tair, an island about 140 kilometres from Yemen, began on Sunday night and eyewitness reports said that lava was spewing hundreds of metres into the air. A defence ministry official said the western part of the island collapsed following the eruption.

Yemen has had a military base on the island since the 1996 conflict with Eritrea over the nearby islands of Hanish and Jabal Zuqar.

The Yemeni coastguard requested for help from nearby NATO ships to rescue the soldiers on the island. A Canadian navy frigate HMCS Toronto answered the request for help and reportedly pulled out two bodies and rescued one soldier.

Yemeni president Ali Abdullah Saleh flew to nearby al-Hudayda port on Sunday to observe the situation, according to local media reports. Officials have linked the eruption to a series of earthquakes that hit the island on Sunday

Search for survivors of Yemen volcano eruption called off

SANAA, Yemen - The search by Canadian and other NATO sailors for survivors of a volcanic eruption on an island in the Red Sea has been called off.

Ken Allen, a spokesman for the Canadian navy says the search ended shortly after noon local time today. The crew of the Canadian frigate HMCS Toronto managed to pull one survivor out of the water, along with two bodies.

But Allen says a vigorous search of an area north of the island of Jabal al-Tair found no other bodies.

He says two Yemeni military personnel who were stationed on the island are missing and presumed dead.

HMCS Toronto, based in Halifax, was in the area with a NATO fleet when the eruption began Sunday evening.

It has since sailed on with the NATO fleet toward the Mediterranean Sea.

Sana'a, Yemen - Eight military troops were missing after a volcano on a three-kilometre-long island in the Red Sea started to spew lava and ash on Sunday evening, state news agency reported.

Navy ships were sent late on Sunday to evacuate the troops stationed on Jabal al-Tair (Bird's Mountain), an unpopulated island located about 100 kilometres from the port city of Houdieda in western Yemen, it said.

Minister of Oil and Minerals Khaled Bahah told the news agency that the 'increasing' volcanic activity in the island was first registered on Friday after a mild quake measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of the mountainous island.

The agency said eight army troopers were missing in a landslide that was triggered by the earthquake.

The minister did not rule out an eruption from the island's highest mountain at 1,200 metres.

He said it remained 'unclear' whether an eruption would occur.

Seismologists said the island sits on a fault line in the southern part of the Red Sea.

SANAA - A volcano has erupted on a Yemeni Red Sea island, killing at least seven soldiers and spewing lava and ash hundreds of metres into the air.

A government official said seven bodies had been recovered, along with one survivor, all soldiers stationed on Jabal al-Tair island, some 130 km off Yemen's mainland.

A Defence Ministry official on the island, which has been home to a military base since Yemen's 1996 conflict with Eritrea, said its western part had "collapsed" into the sea.

Naval ships had been searching the surrounding waters for the soldiers. The island has no civilian inhabitants.

Canadian navy vessel Toronto, part of a Nato fleet sailing north towards the Suez Canal at the time of the eruption, was also conducting search and rescue operations at the request of the Yemeni coast guard.

"Toronto recovered one live survivor who was transferred to a Yemeni coastguard vessel, as well as two dead soldiers who were transferred to a Yemeni patrol boat," said Lieutenant Commander Angus Topshee, second-in-command on the HMCS Toronto.

طمرت الحمم البركانية الناتجة عن البركان الذي وقع أول من أمس في جزيرة جبل الطير اليمنية الواقعة في البحر الأحمر كل أرجاء الجزيرة البالغ مساحتها نحو سبعة كيلومترات مربعة، فيما طمأن المدير العام للدفاع المدني في المملكة الفريق سعد عبدالله التويجري أن بركان جزيرة جبل طير اليمنية لا يشكل أية خطورة على جازان وفرسان.
وأوضحت مصادر في إدارة عمليات القاعدة البحرية بمحافظة الحديدة التي تقع الجزيرة ضمن نطاقها أن "جزيرة جبل الطير طمرت بالكامل إثر انفجار بركاني فيها". وأشارت ذات المصادر إلى أنه تم العثور على ثلاث جثث وناج واحد من أصل ثمانية مفقودين في الجزيرة إثر الانفجار البركاني. وقال إنه تم إخلاء 47 شخصاً من الجزيرة حالة أحدهم خطيرة والباقون حالتهم جيدة ويتلقون العلاج في المستشفى العسكري بمدينة الحديدة.
وكان اليمنيون قد استفاقوا أمس على أنباء كارثة لم يكونوا يتوقعونها، وجاءتهم هذه المرة من البحر، عندما التهم بركان جزيرة جبل الطير تسعة من أبنائهم وجزءا من الجزيرة نفسها. وانتقل الرئيس علي عبدالله صالح إلى محافظة الحديدة التي تقع الجزيرة على بعد 100 كيلو متر فقط من أراضيها البرية، وذلك للإشراف بشكل مباشر على عمليات الإغاثة التي بدأت بها الحكومة والتعامل مع الحادثة من موقع قريب.
وبدأت مأساة جزيرة جبل الطير، التي أقامت فيها اليمن قاعدة عسكرية بعد احتلال إريتريا جزيرة حنيش الكبرى عام 1996، بفرقعات وتساقط للحمم البركانية عصر أول من أمس قبيل أن تشهد الجزيرة هطول أمطار غزيرة مصحوبة بالبرد، وبحسب أحد أفراد الحامية العسكرية التي كانت في الجزيرة فإن أفراد الحامية الذين كانوا لا يزالون في الجزيرة فوجئوا عند الساعة الثانية والنصف من ظهر أول من أمس الأحد باندلاع حمم وفرقعات لكنها لم تتجاوز فوهة البركان، لكن الحمم البركانية تزايدت عقب ذلك، فاضطروا إلى أخذ أغراضهم ومغادرة الجزيرة.
وأشار شاهد عيان آخر تمكن من الفرار من الجزيرة قبل الكارثة إلى أنه وزملاءه بعد أن ساروا نحو ميلين من موقع الحادثة حدث انفجار البركان وتصاعدت الحمم وتناثرت على الجزيرة
بصورة مرعبة. وقال إن نجاته وزملاءه "كانت بفضل معجزة إلهية، بخاصة بعد الهطول المفاجئ للأمطار". وأوضح أن تسعة من زملائه الجنود الذين كانوا في الجزيرة كانوا يسبحون على الجهة الأخرى من الشاطئ دون أن يتنبهوا لمغادرة زملائهم للجزيرة.
وتوجهت عدد من السفن العسكرية التابعة للقوات البحرية والدفاع الساحلي إلى الجزيرة فور تلقيها معلومات عن بداية النشاط البركاني وقامت بإخلاء أفراد الحامية العسكرية في الجزيرة، لكن المصدر أكد أن البحث جار عن ثمانية مفقودين.
من جانبها، حذرت السلطات المحلية بمحافظة الحديدة المواطنين من الاقتراب من جزيرة جبل الطير أو الجزر المجاورة لها، سواء للاصطياد أو لاستكشاف ما حصل فيها. وذكرت مصادر محلية أن محافظ محافظة الحديدة وجه برقية إلى المديريات الساحلية لتحذير المواطنين بهذا الأمر وإجلاء المناطق القريبة من الجزيرة المنكوبة. من جانبها شكلت وزارة الإدارة المحلية غرفة عمليات مشتركة مع الهيئة العامة للجزر للمتابعة والتواصل مع الجهات والسلطة المحلية بالحديدة لمتابعة تطورات البركان في الجزيرة.
إلى ذلك أكد مدير عام الدفاع المدني في المملكة الفريق سعد عبدالله التويجري أن بركان اليمن لا يشكل أي خطورة على جازان وفرسان. من جهته، أوضح الرائد عبد الخالق الجهنمي المتخصص الجيولوجي بالمديرية العامة للدفاع المدني أن بركان اليمن لا يمثل أي خطورة لكونه حدث في جزيرة غير مأهولة وتعتبر جازان بعيدة عن المقذوف البركاني أو من الصخور المنصهرة لأنها تذوب في البحر. أما جزيرة فرسان فيختلف تركيبها الجيولوجي عن جزر اليمن لأنها عبارة عن رصيف مرجاني وصخور رسوبية ملحية ولا يحدث فيها النشاط البركاني.
واتخذت الأجهزة الأمنية في منطقة جازان احتياطات واسعة تحسباً لحدوث أي أضرار ناتجة عن بركان جزيرة اليمن. وأكد الفريق التويجري جاهزية الدفاع المدني لمواجهة أي أضرار من خلال الخطط الموضوعة لذلك. وقال "نحن لسنا ببعيدين عن العالم لأننا جزء منه وهذه الظواهر لا أحد يستطيع منعها وهناك تنسيق قائم مع جميع أجهزة الدولة". وأوضح التويجري أن لدى الدفاع المدني دراسات متقدمة في هذا المجال يقوم بها متخصصون يتم من خلالها العمل على سلامة المواطنين والمقيمين. وطالب الصيادين والمتنزهين بأخذ الحيطة والحذر بالقرب من الجزر, ونبه إلى أنه في حالة مشاهدة تصاعد أدخنة من الجزر ضرورة الابتعاد عنها.
وبين الرائد الجهنمي أن اليمن هي "جز ء من الدرع العربي وجزء نشط تحدث فيه الهزات والزلازل والبراكين. والمنطقة عبارة عن صخور نارية وإذا رافق البركان غازات فإن المقذوفات تكون لمسافات بعيدة ويغطي الرماد البركاني مساحات أوسع.
من جهة أخرى، وجهت قيادة حرس الحدود بمنطقة جازان تحذيرات للصيادين والمتنزهين والدوريات البحرية بإبلاغ الجهات المختصة عن حدوث أي غازات أو أبخرة في الجزر التي يذهبون لها. كما وجه قائد حرس الحدود بالنيابة عبد العزيز الصبحي قائدي قطاعي فرسان والموسم بمتابعة الأوضاع لديهم وإبلاغ غرف العمليات في حالة حدوث أي شيء في الجزر وقطاع الموسم. وأشار مدير إدارة الطرق والنقل في منطقة جازان المهندس ناصر الحازمي إلى أن ما حدث لا يعيق عملية النقل بين فرسان وجازان لأنه لا يمثل خطورة على النقل البحري وهناك تنسيق قائم مع الأجهزة ذات العلاقة.
